Christmas came early for Strandfontein laaities.
Women of Hope (WOH) held a festive party at the YMCA Rotary Camp in Camp Road where they spoilt 200 children on Saturday.
Estelle Woodman of WOH told the Daily Voice that they were honoured to host the party along with generous sponsors who helped feed and clothe the kids.
“We have been feeding the kids in that community for a while now and we saw the need,” she says.
“Those kids are very poor and were deserving of a nice treat to give them that Christmas cheer.
“We had some nice goodie bags and toiletries for the kiddies with a KFC meal to fill their tummies.
“We would have loved to light up the place with bright lights, but because of Covid-19 we couldn’t go all the way.”
The kiddies stood in line in their four groups, excited to receive their dite and goodie bags.
Estelle said: “We were fortunate to host the event at YMCA, which is close to where the kids are staying.
“We managed to help all four camps, each child also got personalised bags, personalised coffee flask mugs filled with sweets and chocolates, toys, party packs and a Christmas outfit.
“I’m so grateful to sponsors Cami and Vernon Paul for coming on board immediately, they offered to help when I told them what I would like to do.”
DJ Donovan played music for the kids while photographer Peter Herring volunteered to capture the moment.
Estelle said the children were moved by the kind gesture: “Some little ones were so overwhelmed, they clapped hands coming up for their gifts and cried tears of gratitude afterwards, it was too much excitement.”
After the 200 kids got their goodies, more children came and also got treats.
“Luckily we had more stuff to give, we catered for more than 200 because we knew some more would appear,” she added.
