Hanover Park residents say they are fed-up with the gang violence which is stopping them from making use of their hospital and library.
Several public institutions in the violence-torn area have been closed due to gang shootings.
On Tuesday, a riot broke out after an 18-year-old man was shot and killed, and residents tried to get to his alleged killers, but were stopped by police.
The Hanover Park Healthcare Centre closes daily at 7pm and residents say they have to make use of the Heideveld Day Hospital as an alternative.
SHUT: Library is a no-go area
The local library was also closed.
A resident, who asked not to be named because of fear of intimidation, says they have become prisoners in their own homes.
“The freedom of residents in Hanover Park is being taken away not only by gangsters, but by the police and the law in general. Resources and opportunities in the area have become less and I am disappointed at the fact that it has become a danger for us to do anything positive in this place.
“The Day Hospital closes at 7pm and residents have to seek medical assistance in Heideveld which is not close by. The library was closed; children have to go to Newfields to do school projects.
“Having to commute to another area is also dangerous and not everyone has the money or means to get there and have to walk.”
He says people are becoming despondent.
The City of Cape Town previously said facilities are closed in instances of gang violence due to safety concerns for staff.
The City did not respond to media inquiries by last night.
