VW Evolution on Saturday held their biggest yet Cancer Run and catered for over 100 children from Tygerberg Hospital’s oncology ward.
They gave the kids snack packs and donated basic necessities like toiletries to the young patients.
The club has been working on the project since the beginning of the year.
The event, which was held at the Anglican Church of Resurrection in Bonteheuwel, was a huge success says club chairman Yusuf Juries.
He says they wanted to shine the spotlight on childhood cancer and make people aware of just how many children are in hospital because of cancer.
According to the Cancer Association of SA, in 2012, from ages 0-19, there were 428 cases in boys and 310 cases in girls diagnosed with different types of cancer.
“I think too few people take note of the cancer thing. It is not just adults but many children being diagnosed lately,” Yusuf says.
He says while only nine little patients were well enough to attend, they took the snack packs and gift bags to the others in hospital.
“We could cater to all the children and we reached our target. I am so glad that with the support of the members we could make this a success,” says Yusuf.
He says the club, which has 30 members from Bontas and Mitchells Plain, is about more than cars.
“It is not just about the cars for us. We want to give back to our people. We even involve our own children to teach them the mentality of caring.
“We want to show the youngsters there are better things out there than gangsterism. It just takes one person to care and to show them.
“This is the change we need in our communities.”
