A Cape Flats animal welfare organisation is appealing for help to feed starving pets some who have died during the nationwide lockdown.
Jaque le Roux of the Animal Welfare Society of SA (AWS) says they got a skrik over the weekend when a desperate dog owner arrived at their base in Philippi and asked for help to feed his furry friend.
“The owner was in tears and explained that he had lost his job and was unable to feed his dog,” says Le Roux.
“It was very sad because the owner had tried his best like many other people suffering in the lockdown just to put food on their own tables and the animals end up suffering.

“After an assessment it was found that the dog’s health had deteriorated at that point the kindest thing to do was to put the dog to sleep.”
Le Roux says during the lockdown, the organisation has seen a sharp increase in starving dogs and cats across the Cape Flats as owners continue to sukkel.
“We cannot get to all the cases and there have been some horrific incidents and while there are some legitimate cases of neglect most owners are really struggling and cannot get to us so we are calling on people to go to the Dog Box Project website where they can make a donation and list AWS as the beneficiary.
“It is not just a once off donation to make people reliant on these donations; every case will be tracked by our inspectors so we can see the progress of the animal.”
