The family of a Manenberg mom who was hospitalised on Sunday after being hit while crossing Duinefontein Road is calling on motorists to slow down.
Hartseer residents say they watched in disbelief as Miriam Losper, 39, was flung in the air when a bakkie hit her as she walked home.
Relative Chantel Davids, 40, says the accident happened on the corner of Duinefontein and Ruimte roads shortly after 5pm.
“She was crossing the road on her way home and a man in a bakkie hit her,” he says.
“She was flung in the air and her foot was broken, she had bruised ribs and injuries to her left arm. She survived but was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
“She is now at Groote Schuur Hospital recovering but what was so scary for us was that four years ago, her 10-year-old son, Igshaan, died at that very same spot also while crossing the road. It’s because the people drive so fast and there are no robots there.”
Chantel says the motorist drove to Manenberg Police Station and returned with police officers who helped get paramedics to attend to Miriam.
While Miriam’s blood could still be seen in the road yesterday, Manenberg police have no record of the incident, says police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk.
NO RECORD: Capt. Van Wyk
Chantel says the family believes traffic lights should be erected at the dangerous intersection.
“They really should have robots there. It is a big intersection. We are grateful the motorist did not run away but they really must look into making Duinefontein Road safer,” she says.
