Next weekend more than 10 000 people are expected to descend on the Blue Downs Sports field for two days of fun.
The event, #Blue Downs Music Festival, is being hosted by the United Wheelers Youth Club (UWYC), which was established in 1997, by a group of youngsters.
Chairperson Colin Africa says in 2012, the club registered as a non-profit organisation and each year they host a music festival to bring the community together.
Club secretary, Jessica Africa, says the two-day event which will be held on 15 and 16 December will see more than 25 local artists take to the stage, dozens of stalls and 24 local soccer clubs compete in a two-day tournament.
“The festival is aimed at giving the local talent in Blue Downs an opportunity to show off their skills but it is also an event to raise much-needed funds for community projects.”
Colin says several years ago Wheelers had a squad for the Cape Town Cycle Tour and the festival will help them raise funds for cycling gear, bikes and safety equipment.
“Over the years we have helped raise funds for smaller clubs in the area to participate.”
They also want to help sukkeling families with kospakkies for a Christmas lunch.
Club administrator, Rubin De Leeuw, says they are struggling with funding.
“We are calling on Capetonians and companies to assist by helping with donations like security service providers or equipment needed for the event.”
Entry to the festival is R25 for children under 12 and R50 for teens and adults.
