It has been an exciting few days for local politics as the leader of the Cape Coloured Congress (CCC) resigned and was reinstated within two days.
On Sunday, Fadiel Adams took to Facebook to announce he was stepping down, saying: “Yesterday I submitted my resignation letter as president of CCC to the party secretary-general.
“I will not give reasons for my exit, other than to say I stay a committed and loyal member of the CCC.”
Adams was however reinstated on Tuesday following an emergency meeting on Monday night, says CCC secretary general, Sakeena Frenchman.
She says they rejected the resignation after it was revealed that Adams had resigned because of attacks on his character from within party ranks.
“Him stepping down comes from the immense pressure that he’s under. His own people made false accusations against him, people he trusted,” she says.
A former supporter who spoke to the Daily Voice anonymously said the party was going nowhere slowly.
“CCC has not even participated in an election and look how their leader acts.
“We are five months away from elections and the party never had a congress, all the leaders are interim and there is no political structure.”
However, many supporters are happy their leader is back.
Commenting on the CCC statement on Facebook, Fouzi Cassiem wrote: “Wow. I did not waste my time on my knees today. I felt so lost, Fadiel!”
And Vivian Willenburg said: “Yoh you, I’m jumping up and down and my kids think I’m mad. Thank you God for hearing our prayers.”
Yesterday, the status of the party changed to “deregistered” on the IEC’s website but according to Frenchman, this was because they are busy changing their status from a local party to a national one.
