The South African Weather Service has issued a weather warning to the City of Cape Town of an intense cold front expected to make landfall in the city on Saturday.
In a statement released on Friday by spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management (DRM), Charlotte Powell said the cold front will be accompanied by strong gale force winds, rain and rough seas.
Powell said all City of Cape Town services will be on standby to assist and deal with the adverse weather conditions.
“We remind residents to please clear out any potential blockages around their homes and ensure that gutters and downpipes are clean. In low-lying areas, please dig a trench around your home if possible, to allow water to run off and reduce the risk of localised flooding,” Powell said.
Two weeks ago, torrential rains in the city saw a number of roads experiencing flooding and power outages across the metropole.
Interior gale force winds were predicted to be from 55 to 75 km/h and gusting winds from 65 to 85 km/h.
Snowfall was recorded in the Matroosberg area, just outside Ceres. Trees were also uprooted in the Durbanville, Ravensmead, Atlantis, Eversdal and Somerset West areas.
Residents living in Overcome Heights, Phola Park, Goliath Estate, Langa, Masiphumulele, Khayelitsha and Philippi informal settlements were the worst affected as their homes were flooded.
For any weather related service requests or emergencies, residents are advised to call the city’s public emergency communication centre.
