Police are hunting for brazen thieves who robbed cash-in-transit security guards loading money into an ATM yesterday morning.
The skelms struck the Fidelity security van crew as they arrived at a Capitec ATM at the Charlesville Mall in Bishop Lavis.
National police spokesperson, Colonel Brenda Muridili, says the suspects first disarmed the security guards of their two firearms.
“It is reported that security officers were busy loading money into an ATM when they were robbed of an undisclosed amount of money at gunpoint by unknown number of suspects,“ she says.
“No injuries were reported and the suspects are still at large.
“The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has taken over the case.”
Witness accounts on social media say the skelms fled the scene in two vehicles – a blue Audi and blue Ford Fiesta – without number plates.
Wahl Bartmann, CEO of Fidelity Services Group, says that Fidelity is working closely with the police and mall management to bring the suspects to book.
“Fortunately no injuries were incurred during the incident to either the crewman or the driver,” he says.
“We do not at this stage believe it is connected to any other incidents happening around Cape Town at the moment. Investigations are currently underway.”
The amount of money stolen was not disclosed and Capitec did not respond to Daily Voice requests for comment at the time of going to print.
