And they say it’s all thanks to the Daily Voice.
The drivers said for the past three months, they were forced to either use the women’s toilets, or pee on a veldjie opposite the Wynberg taxi rank “like dogs”.
On Monday taxi drivers said they were gatvol of lodging complaints and were ready to toyi-toyi if the toilets were not fixed.
Amien Carlsen, chairperson of the Wynberg Taxi Association, said almost 800 drivers were affected by the broken toilets.
Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, Brett Herron, said due to the high usage, the toilets breaks down on a continual basis.
He said the municipality regretted the delay in fixing the toilets and the process would be fast-tracked.
Carlsen says on Tuesday, the day the Daily Voice published the story, a contractor arrived at the taxi rank.
“The day the article came out, we saw two repair teams show up at the taxi rank just after 10am and they fixed everything.
“They finished the job and everything is working,” he says.
He says while many of the taxi drivers are happy that the City has finally carried out the repairs, they are frustrated at having to resort to threats.
“The Daily Voice coming to the toilets and exposing it is the sole reason it was fixed,” he adds.
Herron was not available for comment yesterday.
