A father and his son were arrested for the rape of his two young nieces.
The two were nabbed at their home in Atlantis in the early hours of Friday where police also confiscated videos and video cameras.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed that the men appeared in the Atlantis Magistrates’ Court on Monday, and were each granted R2000 bail.
“The two accused are charged with two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault.
“They had bail fixed at R2000,” says Ntabazalila.
The arrest comes after the father, 56, and son, 23, allegedly abused the two sisters over a number of years, starting about 10 years ago.
The alleged abuse came to light after one of the victims recently tried to commit suicide.
The victims are now 16 and 19 years old respectively.
According to an informed source, the sexual abuse started when the girls were seven and 10 years old.
“One of the sisters tried to commit suicide and after that everything surfaced,” says the source.
Police spokesperson Captain Lisa Munro confirmed the charges against the two men and said they also allegedly watched the two sisters over cameras installed in the house.
“The two accused were arrested on Friday morning by the police’s unit for domestic violence, child abuse and sexual offences.
“Several electronic devices had been seized in the residence. It would appear that the victims were monitored daily in their privacy by security cameras,” Munro said.
Ntabazalila added that the two are expected back at court in August: “The case has been postponed for further investigation and the two accused will appear in the Atlantis Magistrates’ Court on 5 August 2021.”
