Soulful singer and former Jag boy band member Nur Abrahams is holding on to his mic as he joins the world of politics.
The 41-year-old dad of five has joined the newly-formed Democratic People’s Alternative (DPA) party and will be running for Strandfontein ward councillor.
The DPA was founded by Junade Hoosain, Azeem and Samat Omar.
Nur, who’s lived in the area for 14 years, says joining the party won’t take away from his music career.
“Fans and followers shouldn’t get distracted or steered by my decision to join politics,” he says.
“I am joining the DPA because I want to see change.
“I’m tired of seeing the same people stay in power with no real change.
“I’ve spoken to a few people and asked them when they last saw their ward councillor and they can’t even remember.”
The current ward councillor for Ward 43 is the DA’s Elton Jansen.
Nur says ward councillors should work with people on the ground.
“I’ve seen my share of violence and community unrest.
“Things just stay the same in the area, with no real cultural or business development anywhere.
“I’m hoping that if I’m elected, I want to be there for the community.”
Although he has no experience in politics, Nur believes he is up to the job.
He also feels his community needs better opportunities and access to resources.
“The reason why I believe in this vision is because I live in this area and so people’s worries and issues here are mine.
“I think there is so much space here for recreation.
“Why do we have to drive all the way to Sea Point to be outdoors?
“Why can’t we build an open air amphitheatre like we have in other areas?
“There is so much open ground and fields here.”
“I have no political background.
“I think it’s a good thing as I'm not affiliated to any parties in the past.
“This is a fresh take on a new journey.”
The local elections will take place in October.
