A girl, 3, has died after a driver, who was allegedly speeding, crashed into her and her ouma in Elsies River on Sunday night.
Police have since arrested a 48-year old person in connection with the incident.
The gender of the driver is in dispute.
Witnesses at the scene said the granny and child were crossing the road at Halt Road and 33rd Avenue at 6.30pm when they were knocked over.
“A car stopped for them to walk over the pedestrian crossing and this other vehicle with a female driver overtook the car and knocked into them.
“The car was driving fast and they were flung into the air and landed at the corner of 33rd Avenue and Halt Road,” the witness said.
People at the scene stood crying as the little girl lay in a pool of her own blood, while one tiny shoe lay further down the road.
The child died on impact while her ouma, 49, was rushed to a nearby hospital.
It is believed the driver of the vehicle fled the scene.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed a person was arrested on a charge of culpable homicide.
