A family is in shock after learning their 15-year-old son has been arrested following the murder of his grandmother, 75.
The knife used to stab her was from her kitchen.
Ruwayda Omar was found dead in her bedroom on Sunday just before midday.
Her son Magadien Omar, who lives in a wendy house, said he discovered her body when he went to check if his mom was at home.
“I noticed the gate was still locked and realised that she is still at home,” he says.
“I went into the house to see her and when I went into her bedroom, I found piles of clothes on her.
“When I removed the clothes on the bed, I saw my mother’s body.”
The 48-year-old says when the cops arrived, they took him in for questioning.
He was at the police station when his son was arrested.
“I was at the police station for hours and then I was later informed about my son’s arrest,” says Omar.
“I went to see him just to find out what exactly happened.
“But he only spoke in riddles and I left the police station without answers.”
Omar says he was still in shock after the arrest of his eldest son.
“On Sunday morning, I was busy preparing for a braai and when my son walked in, I didn’t notice anything,” he says.
“There was nothing that told me to check. I didn’t hear my mom scream so I didn’t think anything had happened.”
Omar says the teen remained at the scene and didn’t run away.
“When I found out what happened, my son was in the wendy house. He said nothing, he was just quiet.”
Omar added his mom and son had a good relationship.
“There was never anything that suggested that the two were not good with each other,” he says.
“And every family has its ups and downs.
“Something tells me that there is more to this incident, this isn’t like him.
“I think there are more people involved, he could not have done this alone.”
Omar described his son, who is still in primary school, as an introvert.
“He likes to keep to himself. He is very quiet, naughty but quiet,” he says.
“He is not a gangster and doesn’t associate with such things.”
Police spokersperson FC van Wyk said the teen would appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court today on a charge of murder.
