Armed suspects shot a security guard during a robbery at the Shoprite store in Makhaza Shopping Centre in Khayelitsha on Sunday afternoon.
After the robbery, the skelms fled on foot and the guard chased after them with his knobkierie.
He was shot and wounded a few metres from the centre, at Section 41 on Govan Mbeki Road.
Sergeant Wesley Twigg, the police spokesperson, confirms the incident and says: “Harare police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a business robbery and attempted murder which was perpetrated at a shopping centre in Khayelitsha at about 1.20pm.
“The unknown suspects entered the retail store and robbed it from an undisclosed amount of cash.
“A security guard was shot and wounded and was taken to a medical facility for treatment.”
The Shoprite store manager confirmed the incident but says: “We are not allowed to talk about it to the media,” and referred the inquiry to the head office.
Shoprite head office did not reply to queries.
Mense on Facebook posted that the store has been targeted recently, with some complaining that the security guards try to play the hero while putting their lives at high risk during the attacks.
One user commented: “Three incidents in three months! The store is not safe anymore, they can just close it and place their employees at other shops before this gets worse.”
