A former cop who has been labelled as the “Mamma of the JCY” gang as well as her 10 co-accused are expected to see the inside of the Western Cape High Court soon once the outcome of an identity parade is revealed this week.
Penny Ventura and her co-accused made a brief appearance at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, during mayhem caused by load shedding earlier in the day.
The State is awaiting feedback on the identity parade held recently.
The outcome is expected to be concluded this week.
The matter will then be transferred to the High Court for pre-trial proceedings later this month.
Outside court, three members of the gang out on bail told the Daily Voice they are being framed by cops but could not give a motive for this.
“The police must be exposed, we are innocent,” one suspect said.
Ventura, who was stationed at Lentegeur Police Station, was arrested with 10 alleged gang hitmen last year and are facing 50 charges including six murders, several attempted murders, the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and charges relating to the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca).
Ventura was granted R1000 bail in December along with two of the other accused, one who is also wheelchair-bound.
They have been prohibited from entering the Mitchells Plain area and are only allowed to attend their court cases.
Ventura was left a paraplegic after she was shot and her house petrol-bombed in 2018.
During her bail application, cops revealed she was forced to use a false name while in hospital to protect her from rival gangs.
The group - excluding Ventura - may not be identified until the identity parade is completed.
