An attempt to evict a group of queers, who are illegally occupying a holiday house in Camps Bay, failed on Thursday.
Two men arrived at the larney house in Roland Avenue shortly after 5pm, saying they were from rental company Turnkey365, and asked the group to vacate the premises.
But they were forced to make a U-turn after the group of “radical feminists” said they would not be moved.
The group, who started the #WeSeeYouMovement, consists of six “queer” females and one “transitioning” male.
They had paid R15 000 to the rental company to book the larney house for the weekend.
They were supposed to check out on Monday, but instead sent an email to the company, apologising and stating their intention to stay “forever” without paying.
Turnkey365 had given the invaders until yesterday to vacate the house.
But at 5.15pm, the queers told the two reps they would be extending their stay indefinitely.
The men dressed in black golf T-shirts with the company logo, grey shorts and flip flops approached the home and one pressed the intercom while clutching a document.
The queers did not open, but spoke through the gate, indicating they would not be leaving.
The Turnkey365 employees confirmed to the Daily Voice that they were there to evict the activists.
“We were here to evict them, but they said they will not vacate the house,” said one of the men.
The queers did not want to comment yesterday.
The manager of the six-bedroom property, Gaby van Wyk, also declined to speak, saying her company has now appointed a PR firm.
She said they will be having a meeting and then issue a statement on the way forward.
The #WeSeeYou movement said the occupation aims to highlight the plight of the poor and vulnerable.
“We are occupying in protest of the lack of safe space for queer people, women and children in a country with disgusting rates of gender-based violence,” they said in a statement.
“We invite everyone into transgressive and peaceful acts of solidarity with those who cannot pay rent, cannot afford to eat, those who live at the threat of violence.”
