Hundreds of gatvol Manenberg residents took to the streets on Sunday calling for an end to a bloody gang war.
Following a spate of shootings which have left several dead or injured, residents marched to various hotspots calling for an end to the violence which has the community gripped by fear.
Community worker Amiena Abrahams says residents gathered at the traffic circle along Manenberg Avenue as they marched for peace.
“As parents we are tired of the gang fights and are being kept hostage in our own homes since the gang fights started in April,” Amiena said.
“We don’t know when to even go out of our homes to go to the shops. As a mother who almost lost a child I cannot turn a blind eye.
“We are pleading with the gangsters to consider our people and our children and for the community to work together to create a free and vibrant Manenberg."
The recent shootings have also seen police come under fire in the Cape Flats community which resulted in the death of a skollie last Tuesday.
The man was shot and killed after he shot at Metro cops deployed to quell the ongoing violence.
Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said a 9mm CZ pistol was recovered with the serial number removed, along with six rounds of ammunition.
Vanessa Adriaanse of the Community Police Forum says residents in Heideveld are also rising up against gangs and will host a march on Sunday.
“Along with the Heideveld Development Forum, the residents in Heideveld will also hold a march. The community is tired and we cannot allow these shootings to become a way of life,” Vanessa added.
