Members of the Shumeez Scott Foundation spent their Sunday handing out food parcels to the less privileged.
Shumeez, 19, from Mitchells Plain, was born with Down Syndrome and is a successful model and beauty queen.
She started her foundation two years ago, which is spearheaded by her proud mother, Bahia Janodien, and accommodates and assists indivi-
duals with Down Syndrome and autism.
Bahia says these young adults, who form part of the foundation, were overjoyed to do their first food drive.
“We handed out 100 food parcels and fed over 200 underprivileged people,” she says.
The group first went to Masjieduth Thaalith in Mitchells Plain and then to Masturah Sunni Masjied in Philippi.
“The young adults were overwhelmed with handing out the food parcels themselves,” Bahia says.
“God has given you the opportunity to be able to share with others and this made them feel good to make a difference as well and also to meet these kids.”
Shumeez says she was brought to tears when she was approached by a little boy who reached out his hand for food.
“He was so oulik, so small and it hurts my heart to see him hungry and cold,” the teen says.
The group also handed out warm dite to people who queued for the food parcels.
“Even though they are people with special needs, they have a heart and an understanding for what is going on in our communities. They are more than eager to come back and do it again and we will, after Ramadaan,” Bahia says of the group.
