Law Enforcement officers caught the baby of a woman who went into labour in the street on Wednesday afternoon.
Members of the City’s Law Enforcement Anti-Land Invasion Unit assisted the heavily pregnant Aisha Ally, whose water broke as she was boarding a taxi coming from the clinic.
“I did not feel anything when I left the clinic, the pain started when I was inside the taxi,” says the new mom from Elsies River.
She says she started screaming to alert the driver.
“I was the only woman inside the taxi and I told the driver that my mother is waiting for me at the bus stop.”
Panicking, the taxi driver picked up Aisha’s mom attempting to drive them to the hospital, but it was too late.
The hapless driver stopped at the busy Halt and Voortrekker Road intersection where he spotted the officers and called for help.
“There was no time to wait for the ambulance, the officers together with my mother delivered the baby on the street,” says Aisha.
The healthy baby girl and her mom were taken to hospital for a check-up and were discharged on Thursday morning.
“I would like to thank the officers and the driver for helping me,” says a grateful Aisha.
Law Enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason says the officers involved were extremely proud to have played a role in the birth of the baby although it was a “daunting experience”.
“The officers also expressed their gratitude to the grandmother and the mother of the child for the calm manner in which they handled the situation,” Dyason says.
