A second woman was gunned down in Cape Town on Women’s Day, this time in Kuyasa, Khayelitsha.
The 33-year-old victim’s two-year-old son was also shot and wounded during the attack.
On Monday, the Daily Voice reported on the Elsies River murder of Jessica Hendricks, 44, and her boyfriend, Paul Haai, 49.
The couple is believed to have been wrongfully targeted during a gang-related attack in Clarke Estate on Sunday.
One suspect has been arrested and will appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court on charges of murder and attempted murder.
SAPS’ Andrè Traut says the slain Khayelitsha mother was shot and killed at about 7.45pm: “A 33-year-old female was shot and killed at her residence in Ndulamthi Street, Kuyasa, Harare by an unknown suspect who is yet to be arrested.
The victim’s son was also wounded during the incident and admitted to hospital.”
He says the circumstances surrounding the attack are still being investigated.
Fransina Lukas, chairperson of the Western Cape Community Policing Forum Board, says this murder is testament to the lack of respect there is for women in society.
“We are not free to walk where we want to. We are not free to wear what we want to.
“I suspect the killer is someone close to her. Government needs to take this thing seriously.”
Lukas says the murder once again shines the spotlight on Gender-Based Violence in South Africa, a scourge she says that needs to come to an end.
She called for the swift arrest of the person responsible “so that justice can be served”.
Any persons with information regarding the incident are advised to contact Harare SAPS or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
