Police are investigating the fifth robbery at the MTN shop in Vangate Mall since last year.
Late on Thursday afternoon, four men held staff at gunpoint and stole more than 100 new cellphones, as well as the personal phones of staff.
Police say the suspects fled in a white Toyota Avanza, and no shots were fired during the robbery.
A traumatised staff member says one robber came in alone, and showed staff his gun. He then ordered them to the back room and produced three large checkered shopping bags which he demanded they fill up with new phones.
“We were afraid and then the three other men came into the store as well to help the first guy. We just stood around, hoping for it to be over,” the male staffer says.
“These skelms were just being spiteful when they took our phones also. This is the fifth time we have been robbed in a very short time. It’s very sad, but at least we are all alive.”
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says: “On Thursday an unidentified male entered a cellphone shop at a shopping mall in Bosduif Road, Bridgetown (and robbed them). The suspects left the scene and fled in a white Toyota Avanza with an unknown registration number.
“No shots were fired and no injuries were sustained. Athlone police have registered a case of business robbery and the suspects are still at large.”
