Residents of Eikendal in Kraaifontein were left shocked when the body of a newborn baby was found in a bin yesterday.
The fully developed baby girl was discovered by a bin scratcher in 12th Avenue.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirms the find and says police are searching for the baby’s mother.
“This office can confirm that a foetus was discovered on Tuesday, 4 May at around 8.50am inside a bin in 12th Avenue, Eikendal, Kraaifontein. An inquest case was registered for investigation.”
Resident Elaine Louw says they were standing outside talking about blocked drains in the street when the baby was discovered.
“We were discussing the overflow of sewage in our area causing a stink for the past two weeks when the bin scratcher found the baby in a neighbour’s black wheelie bin.
“According to the homeowner the baby was not in the bin when they put it out for the refuse collectors.
“The poor bin scratcher got such a fright when he found the baby still covered in blood in a plastic bag.”
She says they informed the neighbourhood watch who called the police and an ambulance.
Anyone with information about the baby or her mother is asked to contact Kraaifontein detectives on 082 469 3319.
All information received will be treated as confidential, says Captain Van Wyk.
