Meet the 100-year-old ouma who still smokes like a chimney.
Ouma Sofie Fortuin from Delft celebrated her milestone birthday on Youth Day yesterday and firmly believes that it’s her pakkie Chicago’s that keep her healthy, and even saved her after she contracted Covid last year.
The hip granny tells the Daily Voice: “I’ve never been on medication and the last time I saw a doctor in hospital when I had Covid, they said I mustn’t stop smoking. Chicago’s hou my aan die lewe.”
Ouma Sofie says she started puffing more than eight decades ago when she was just 19-years-old.
“I don’t usually smoke the whole entjie, I nip it. My advice to smokers is that you must never draw the smoke deep into your lungs, that’s why people get sick.
“I can still walk on my own, although not as fast as I used to.
Ouma Sofie says she was born 100 years ago in Duinefontein, Philippi.
“My husband Jack died a long time ago, as well as our four children.
“My raad aan kinders is, bly jy die minste as jou ouers met jou praat, sodat die Here jou dae verleng mag word.”
Her eldest grandchild, Cathy Jacobs, 57, says her ouma is still going strong.
“She survived Covid, and when we have loadshedding, she will walk on her own to the loo in the dark,” says Cathy.
“She will even walk to Aunty Charlene Miles’ soup kitchen, even if she takes it step by step, she’s very determined.
“She will only call on us if she wants a glass of water. She’s a real blessing in our home.”
Charlene Miles, Sensei Elias and Lillian Kattan from Langeberg Ridge in Kraaifontein gifted Ouma Sofia a warm blanket and a lekker birthday cake for her big day.
