The case of the man who allegedly killed his girlfriend and then burnt her body while out on bail will now be moved to the Paarl Regional Court.
Sithobele Qebe, 30, is charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and the murder of 27-year-old Siphokazi Booi.
He made a brief appearance yesterday, over a week after his bail bid was denied.
National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesman Eric Ntabazalila confirmed the matter has been postponed to 7 October 2021 for a Regional Court date.
During the bail hearing on 23 September, it was heard that the suspect had lied about pending cases.
“In his Schedule 6 bail application where he was expected to convince the court that exceptional circumstances existed for him to be released on bail and that it was in the interest of justice for him to be on bail, Qebe told the court that he was a father of two children.
“He added that he had no previous convictions and no pending cases,” Ntabazalila said.
Qebe allegedly assaulted the victim and she vomited and died in her sleep.
In her testimony, Mbekweni SAPS’ investigating officer, Sergeant Vivienne Engelbrecht said: “He confessed that he collected a dustbin, bundled her limp body into it with her feet up; then covered them with a plastic sheet.
“He said he then pushed the dustbin to a dumpsite where there was a fire.
“He claims that he left her body in the dustbin at the dumpsite and denies that he burnt her body.
“The body was confirmed to be that of Booi after DNA was taken from family members.”
