A young policeman is taking his job of serving his community to a new level and this weekend dug deep into his own pocket to feed a few hungry tummies.
Many people have lost their income due to the Coronavirus lockdown, and not everyone is lucky to get a food parcel or a hot meal from the various private entities, non-government organisations, businesses and Sassa officials feeding the nation.
That is why Constable Kwayo Louw, 23, decided to take matters into his own hands.
Kwayo lives in Kraaifontein, but is stationed at the Pinelands SAPS.
The young man says seeing so many people desperately trying to feed their families touched his heart.
On Thursday, he brought five families to tears when he went to hand out food parcels to them.
This after he asked residents on the Kraailove WhatsApp group to nominate needy families and they responded.
Many on the group have been commenting about the need for humanitarian assistance in Kraaifontein.
Kwayo says it was a pleasure to assist and he was definitely not looking for publicity when he reached out to the families.
“I was taught that your left hand must not know what your right hand does,” he says.
“It was a real pleasure to see the smiles on the faces of especially the mothers and fathers as they knew they would be able to feed their children for a few days at least.
“It doesn’t matter where you live, this food problem is affecting everyone.
“I have told the families they haven’t seen the last of me,” he adds with a smile.
Leone Lottering from Wallacedene commended the young constable for his generosity.
She says: “I’ve nominated ouma Kaytie Brink for a food parcel because she has never received a parcel since lockdown started.”
Ouma Kaytie, 70, says it’s not for a lack of trying.
The grateful pensioner says she’s even gone to the local clinic in Wallacedene for help: “I’ve been trying how long to get a food parcel, but nothing, and then this young man arrives at my home.”
Mom of three Maxery Davids, 29, from Wallacedene says work is scarce.
“Yes, I’m not old but we have no income in our home at all. With this food parcel I can make a pot of soup for my kids. It’s a wonderful gift, thank you Kwayo.”
