Leonsdale laaities were forced to run for their lives after skollies opened fire in 15th Avenue just before 8am on Tuesday.
Cops say while more than 30 shots were fired, no resident came forward to give a statement.
When Daily Voice visited the area on Tuesday residents confirmed that children, who were walking to school, ran for cover when the shooting started.
However, they remained mum on who was responsible for the shooting.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirmed the incident and says no injuries were reported.
The Elsies River Community Police Forum (CPF) says residents are scared of gun-wielding gangsters who have been embroiled in daily shootings and retaliation shootings since last Thursday, resulting in three murders and three attempted murders.
“There are numerous times when the children must run for their lives and hide in bushes as gangsters shoot in the morning. People are very scared to talk and you can’t blame them because the gangsters are ruthless and vicious,” says the CPF's Imraahn Mukkadam.
Just over a week ago the Metro Police’s Gang and Drugs Task Team found 181 rounds of R1, R4 and R5 hollow point bullets hidden on a field in 12th Avenue in Leonsdale.
A police source says the ammo can penetrate a bulletproof vest and is known on the streets as “cop killers”.
Mukkadam says: “This shows that we are in a civil war and the gangsters are armed to the teeth. What are they doing with hollow points? That is to shoot a cop. It is time for the army to come into Elsies River.”
