A Cape Flats mall was shut down on Tuesday after shots were fired during an armed robbery of a cellphone shop.
This was the sixth MTN store to be robbed in Cape Town in eight months.
Police say one person was wounded in the robbery on Tuesday at Parow Centre in Parow.
Two armed robbers stormed into the MTN store at 3.30pm, threatened staff and raided cash and phones before firing and wounding a passer-by in the arm.
Cops say the gunshots went off inside the mall.
Soon an alert was sent out on television screens dotted inside the mall, warning customers and staff that gunshots had been fired.
“Attention all. Please be careful as they are shooting in the mall,” read the notice.
Captain FC van Wyk says the robbers had fled in an unidentified vehicle.
“This office can confirm a business robbery at a shopping centre in Parow at about 3.30pm [Tuesday],”’ he says.
“According to reports, two unidentified males entered the cellular telephone shop, they were positively armed and they threatened the employees.
“They took an undisclosed amount of cellular telephones and fled the scene.
“While fleeing from the scene, they shot and wounded one person in the arm. It is unknown what type of vehicle was used to flee from the mall.”
MTN’s Mamello Raborifi didn’t want to comment and said they would be issuing a statement soon.
Previously, MTN stores in Ottery, Kenilworth Centre, Westgate Mall and Vangate Mall were targeted.
