The N7 highway was shut on Friday after brazen skelms bombed a Fidelity cash van, making off with a large amount of money.
According to a source, the skelms were armed with R5 rifles and brazenly opened fire on the cash van near Melkbosstrand on Friday night.
“Cops from Melkbos, Table View and Milnerton were called to the scene after the skelms got the cash van to stop and bombed it,” says the source.
“The information is not clear but what was ascertained was that the van was near the Melkbosstrand turn-off on the N7 after 7pm when they came under fire by three black males driving a Toyota Fortuner and an Audi.
“They somehow got the van to stop and it was left in a ditch on the side of the road.
“They then attached explosives to the van and bombed it to get the money.”
The source says when police arrived they found two explosives still attached to the van and the SAPS Bomb Squad was called in.
“Two of the bombs did not detonate and the Bomb Squad came in to dismantle it safely. The guards were not hurt during the incident.”
Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili confirms the incident and says the driver reported that they came under fire and stopped the vehicle and ran for safety.
“The driver and crew fled into the nearby bushes to take cover. Unknown suspects allegedly used explosives to gain access into the armoured vehicle's safe.
“The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money in two vehicles. No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made yet.”
