Alleged 28s gang boss Ralph Stanfield is set to go on trial later this month at the Cape Town Regional Court for allegedly defrauding the Central Firearms Registry.
Stanfield, his wife Nicole, and several other relatives appeared in court on Monday where they face an array of charges including fraud, corruption, contravening the Firearms Control Act, defeating the ends of justice and charges under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca).
According to the charges sheet, Stanfield and 22 other people from various areas including Valhalla Park, Beacon Valley and Steenberg are accused of providing false information to obtain firearm competency certificates.
It states that between December 2013 and June 2014, one of the accused Billy April offered to pay cops at the Firearms Registry R1500 to obtain fraudulent certificates.
It further says that the group applied for licences at Olifantsfontein Police Station when they did not live in the police district and did not attend any theoretical or practical training to obtain proficiency certificates.
Between March 2014 and June 2014, Stanfield is accused of unlawfully being in possession of five firearms including a Remington rifle while travelling in Mitchells Plain, Table View, Athlone and other places.
The state alleges that during the same time, Nicole also unlawfully had three firearms in her possession including a rifle.
And during a search at a filling station on John Ramsay Avenue, owned by Stanfield, cops confiscated a large stash of ammunition which included hollow point.
NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says the case has been provisionally postponed to 17 August to arrange a trial date with the magistrate.
