Motorists in peak traffic along Okavango Road got a skrik when they saw little smoke billowing out of Steers near Cape Gate Mall on Monday morning.
Shortly after 8am, a fryer in the kitchen of the popular franchise overheated, bursting into flames.
Employees could be seen evacuating the building while management was trying to contain the blaze.
“A fryer in the kitchen is what started the fire and gave everyone this big fright. Luckily no one was injured and we hope to reopen within a few days,” a Steers manager at the scene said.
An employee says they are grateful to Fire and Rescue Services for their swift response: “We have great management that goes out of their way for customers.
“Luckily the fire depot is close by and firefighters could attend within minutes.”
City Fire and Rescue spokesman Theo Layne confirmed the overheated fryer was the cause of the fire.
“We can confirm there was a small fire in the kitchen area, no injuries were reported. The probable cause of the fire was a fryer overheating.”
