A video of five boys making music with home-made “instruments” has gone viral on Facebook after a Manenberg resident filmed them having an outdoor jam session.
Fareed Jansen, 59, lives in Grieta Court and says he was walking around when he heard the group of happy youngsters having a jol.
Fareed, who lives two blocks away from Joyce Court where the boys played, says he followed the sound of the “rak-a-tak” beats and was surprised when he saw who was kapping uit.
He says he asked the boys whether he could make a video and post it online and they excitedly said yes.
“They use empty plastic containers to make the instruments, there was a 5 litre water canister, 20-litre paint blik, a coffee tin and some metal sheets with broken broomsticks (for the drumsticks),” he explains.
Fareed says he didn’t know his video would go viral and only uploaded it to spread “feel-good’ vibes.
“You see, since Rashied Staggie died, people had this perception that gangsterism and crime would boil over here in Manenberg, people thought that his death meant we would be prisoners in our own homes but they are wrong, look at how lekker these boys are playing outside freely,” he says.
Staggie, the former leader of the Hard Livings gang, was shot and killed outside his Salt River home two weeks ago.
DISCOVERY: Fareed Jansen.
“This is the territory of the Clever Kidz, they own Joyce Court, and these boys are expected to fall into the gangs at this age already, but they aren’t, they are focused on their music,” adds Fareed.
He posted his video, “THE BEAT OF MANENBERG”, on Facebook last week and by yesterday, it was viewed more than 31 000 times.
