This holy month of Ramadaan has seen many communities come together to break bread and their fast more communal ways.
The Bonteheuwel Islamic Youth Movement (BIYM) held their third annual mass street boeka on Sunday in Bluegum Street with around 2 000 mense in attendance.
Chairperson of the BIYM, Luqmaan Etalla said that the street boeka is not just for Muslims but for all faiths in the community.
Luqmaan explains: “The purpose of the street boeka is to unite organisations and different faiths in the area and it was a big success in that regard.
"We fed close to the 2 000 mark and had ten pots of akni, including boeka treats such as soup and boeber.
“It was a bit chaotic, but we organised ourselves very quickly and sorted everyone out. We catered for the little ones as well with party packets and things for the children.
"One of our donors was so overwhelmed that he made a commitment for another street boeka on Friday night in Bonteheuwel.”
“This street boeka was not just for Muslims but for the Christian and other denominations as well. This is our third street boeka and it was very successful.
"We are thankful to all the organisations who were on board and shukran to all our donors who assisted and everyone in our community who came out.”
Bluegum Street was decorated with a huge white cloth loaded with fruit, water and cooldrink as the community of Bontas came together to enjoy a meal.
Local ward councillor Angus McKenzie adds: “What an amazing experience. I want to thank every sponsor far too many to mention who has made [Sunday] night possible here in Bluegum Street.
"To see people happy, to see people enjoying themselves and to see the sharing happening among all religions and all people is exactly what Bonteheuwel is all about.
"This fast has really brought Bontehuwal together and has set a platform for Bonteheuwel to continue to be greater and be the greatest community there is.”
