It was a joyous occasion for the learners of Crestway High School in Retreat with the opening of their new computer lab, named the Paul and Sheila Magerman Computer Centre.
The computer centre was named after the late ex-principal and educator Paul Magerman and his late wife and was officially sponsored and opened by Fabian Paul Magerman, Group CEO of Moov Energy in honour of his parents.
The official opening on Tuesday was attended by ex-learners like Fabian, educators and friends of the late palie.
The first female principal of Crestway High, Cheryl Jacobs, said she is very excited as the new computer lab can accommodate more learners.
She says: “I want this school to always be a beacon of hope for our learners and our community and this initiative is a stepping stone in giving hope to our learners.
“We have a Computer Applications Technology (CAT) lab and the only learners who have access to that lab are the learners taking the subject CAT.
"However this new centre will be open for learners who want to apply for university, do research, coding, robotics and research learning platforms where they can access lessons and pass papers.”
The centre currently consists of 24 computers and Principal Jacobs said that they are in the process of Phase two which will fully equip the room.
Fabian Magerman said Moov Energy collaborated with other companies to help set up the computer lab.
He adds: “When I got to the school, it was a flood of emotions for me because I started at the school in 1985 and matriculated in 1990 and it has just been an incredible journey post matric.
"The values we learned at this school were about community, mobilisation, making sure your ethos permeates through the entire school.
“I lost my parents during Covid and it was a difficult time for my family because we could not celebrate their life due to the Covid restrictions, so this was an opportunity for us to give back to them.”
“The true ethos is that my parents were both in the education, we have a legacy of teaching in our family so this was an opportunity for us to give back into the community we grew up and my father played a very big role in the community where he was a teacher and principal."
