A brazen gunman shot and killed a woman while she was buying an apple at a fruit stall in Philippi East.
The shooter also shot and wounded a 49-year-old vrou who owns the stall on the corner of Stock and Protea Roads.
Nosipho Mpunde got out of a Toyota Avanza to buy an apple but before she got the fruit from the hawker, she was killed.
The wounded hawker’s husband, who refused to be named, says they had just arrived at the stall when Nosipho asked for the apple and while his wife assisted her, he heard gunshots.
“I froze for a moment and then I went to see what happened,” he explains.
“The deceased didn’t even have the chance to take the apple, my wife was shot in the eye and the other woman was shot in the head.
“The suspect shot them and then walked away.”
The 61-year-old man says his wife was still breathing and she was taken to hospital.
“This is very shocking and I don’t know if my wife will survive this.
“I’m still puzzled by the shooting because I don’t understand why they shot both women.
“We are only selling fruit here, we are not involved in anything.”
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut says: “The circumstances surrounding a murder and an attempted murder are being investigated following an incident yesterday morning at around 6.30am at a fruit stall in Protea Road, Philippi East, where a 48-year-old woman was shot and wounded and another female shot and killed.
“Unknown suspects fled from the scene and are yet to be arrested.”
