This week, everyone is preparing their family for the 21-day national lockdown - which includes stocking up your koskas.
So much has happened over the last few days and that was just the beginning.
With the nationwide lockdown looming, I’m already stressed about what I’m doing to do with the extra time on my hands.
Whatever I’ll get up to, eating will definitely be at the top of that list.
My one concern, however, is filling my plate with the wrong kind of kos.
Which brings me to this week’s theme, the “Plate of the Nation”.
It’s no secret that South African is one of the unhealthiest nations in the world. You can’t get between a South African and a lekker chop.
84% of the population are meat-eaters and across all regions and demographics, our mense eat meat on average four times a week.
This is according to a recent study of South Africans’ eating habits by Nielsen, a global measurement and data analytics company.
The study also shows that our plates usually consists of 41% starch (potatoes, rice, pastas) and 26% meat only 13% vegetables.
It also showed that we eat starch six times a week, with bread, rice, potatoes and mielie pap being the most common. And we eat vegetables only four times a week.
In a bid to change the current plate of the nation and increase our vegetable intake, Knorr has shared some lekker veggie-based recipes that you can enjoy alongside your vleis.
Knorr’s Chrislynn Ramdeo says: “We need to change the plate of our nation because as Winston Churchill once said, ‘healthy citizens are the greatest asset a country can have’. Knorr wants to make healthy eating more accessible for all.”
