Not only do we live in the most beautiful city in the world, but I think the Mother City can get a new nickname, that of the City of Talent.
Capetonians have always had an ear for music and when we embrace an artist, the rest of the country and the world eventually catches on.
If ever there was a sense of hope for Cape Town, then it is in the year 2017.
We have been doing so many positive things and achieved such amazing results this year, that if you still haven’t found a role model as the youth, you must still be aspiring to become a drug lord or flakka addict.
Cape Town is morphing into a goldmine of role models for young and old, and there’s no better time to shine the light on our wealth of talent than right now.
The spirit of the Mother City is such that if our hearts become connected to a person, we will do everything in our power to push them straight to the top.
This is evident in the fact that every single national talent competition has been won by one of Cape Town’s very own this year.
If Kaapstad loves you they will vote for your brighter future, no doubt about that.
The trend started when Craig Lucas made his way out onto The Voice SA stage and sang his heart out.
Cape Town rallied behind their son and eventually he was crowned winner.
Week after week, the votes poured in for Craig, proving that while we might not have water, we have data and airtime to vote!
If we are not crowned the city of champions this year, then at least we deserve the title of the city that no longer sends Please Call Me’s.
From there, we rallied behind our manne in their white and blue stripe jerseys, hoya, WP jou lekker ding!
Our beloved Western Province played their hearts out and no doubt deserved to come home with the Currie Cup.
There we were, maybe not with our data, but with our hearts and lungs supporting our boys, shouting PROOOOOOVINCE!
If Allister Coetzee took note of the hearts of Capetonians, then he should have been smart enough to select Nizaam Carr, if not for his sheer skill and brilliance, then simply because Zamo has that winning Kaapstad energy that the Bokke so desperately need.
This year we also saw the Kenmere Primary School choir being crowned the national champions in the Sing in Harmonie competition on KykNet.
On this day, a group of excited laaities, a goal-driven teacher, proud parents and classmates inspired us to take another look at ourselves and strive to do better.
Really, maakie saak watter channel jy jou TV op sit nie, daar is altyd ‘n Kapie involved. How wonderful is it that the winners of SA’s Got Talent were from the Cape?
Congratulations to acapella group AnecNote on their win and for inspiring laaities to believe that anything is possible.
ON SONG: Acapella group AnecNote took SA’s Got Talent title
And as if that was not enough, along came Bishop Lavis teenager Paxton Fielies, who stole the hearts of every single Capetonian, and most of South Africa as well.
ROLE MODEL: Paxton Fielies from Lavis
The way she speaks, her humility, her song choice, her sheer talent all helped catapult her into instant stardom, and to being an instant millionaire.
The jubilation and joy at her win truly represents the Kaapse Vlakte as it shows that no matter which area you come from, if you push hard, then Cape Town will have your back.
In the midst of the Paxton frenzy, another Western Cape resident made global headlines - Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was crowned as the new Miss Universe.
QUEEN: Dem-Leigh is Miss Universe
Now I’m not a big fan of beauty pageants, but I love the fact that another Kapie rose to the top of her game.
So while surfing the net, I see these stories of gangsters giving out free Flakka in Bontas to get our laaities hooked.
But I said to myself, there is no way that Cape Town is going to become known as the city with the most flakka addicts, like it was back in the day with tik.
Not this year, when we have so much hope for our youth.
Flakka chose a bad time to launch in Kaapstad.
I, for one, won’t sit back and make excuses for anyone who chooses to venture in that direction, not the year that we are living in the City of Winners.
