The Cape Town derby is one of the most hotly-anticipated and most exciting games between neighbours the Mother City has seen for years.
Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City FC clash at the Cape Town Stadium this Friday night.
And trust me, it’s going to be a grudge match.
It’s been a while since Cape Town had such a lekker spicy derby to look forward to.
In fact, we haven’t even had a top-flight Cape derby since Chippa United moved to Port Elizabeth in 2014.
Santos were relegated in 2012 so their rivalry with Ajax hasn’t been seen on the big stage for four years.
In 2010/11 we were spoiled with three derbies as Vasco da Gama were also in the PSL.
But a Cape derby has never truly had so much potential for drama.
Given the history between the owners of Ajax and CTC, you can bet both sides will be extra determined.
The Efstathiou family will want to show Ajax is the No.1 club in the city, especially since former chairman John Comitis swooped back onto the scene with his new club and new players and swanky new gear.
On the field of play, Eric Tinkler and Roger de Sa know each other very well and so it will be a treat to see the tactical battle.
Most of the CTC side were part of that Black Aces team that beat Ajax 1-0 in Mpumalanga, with ex-Warriors boss Muhsin Ertugral dedicating the win to Comitis.
So they fully understand the history and the drama.
Some of the Cape Town City staff used to work for Ajax but left to reunite with Comitis. Former Ajax coach Craig Rosslee is on the CTC Technical team.
Then there’s former Ajax midfielder Lebo Manyama who now captains CTC while his teammate Ebrahim Seedat also had a brief spell at Ikamva.
There is just so much history between these two clubs that we are in for a fiery game on Friday.
