Steenberg United is slowly losing ground in the chase for promotion after another defeat in the Championship this past weekend.
I guess by letting go of Ayabulela Konqobe, Athini Jodwana, Ryan Bartman and Ruzaigh Gamildien they were confirming they were pulling out of the race.
Steenberg went down 1-0 to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila at Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.
They have a bye this weekend because of the Nedbank Cup, which they can use as a bit of breathing space.
Ajax Cape Town, meanwhile, cemented their place at the top of the standings with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Real Kings at Cape Town Stadium on Monday.
Cohen Stander equalised after the Urban Warriors went a goal down in the first half, before the league’s leading goalscorer Abednego Mosiatlhaga netted his 16th goal for the win.
Cape Umoya United put some breaks on Uthongathi holding them to a 1-1 draw, a result that helps their neighbours Ajax in their chase for a direct return to the Premiership.
Ajax and Umoya will also sit out this weekend, as they too were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup.
