Bafana Bafana will have to wait until 2022 to play their next Afcon tournament after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Tuesday postponed the 2021 tournament.
Following a virtual CAF executive committee meeting, president Ahmed Ahmed confirmed that the Cameroon event will be moved from June 2021 to January 2022.
Africa’s football governing body has been struggling to deal with the impact of the coronavirus
pandemic and a programme of qualifiers for the rest of the year still needs to be confirmed.
Bafana lie second in their Group C qualifying pool after a win and a loss with four games left.
They are scheduled to play Sao Tome e Principe in a double header next, before hosting Ghana and going away to Sudan.
CAF’s African Nations Championship (CHAN), the continental tournament for home-based
players, will now take place in January 2021 after lockdown stopped it from being held during April of this year.
On the club front, the Champions League and Confederation Cup semifinals will be hosted this September in Cameroon and Morocco, respectively.
Format changes will see the two-legged semifinal and final matches become one-offs.
Meanwhile, CAF announced a newly-formed CAF Women’s Champions League is set to take place in January 2021.
It replaces the scrapped 2020 Women’s Afcon.
