A Muslim organisation has established a preservation fund in the name of Moulana Ihsaan Hendricks, the former president of the Muslim Judicial Council who passed away last week.
Charity Awqaf South Africa says a R50 000 endowment fund will be established and proceeds donated to the Sheikh Abul-Husain Ali al-Nadwi Leadership Academy.
Deputy CEO Mickaeel Collier says the fund is a tribute to the well-known scholar, community leader and activist who passed away, aged 53, on 10 August after a long illness.
Hendricks founded the Nurul Hudaa Early Learning Centre the Belhar Islamic Primary School and the Shakireen Educare Centre in Wellington.
As president of the MJC, until 2016, he was instrumental in establishing the Department of Qur’anic Affairs and the Al-Quds Foundation, of which he became head.
“A passionate campaigner for awareness of Palestine, and other causes, he was recognised as one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Islamic Strategies Centre in Jordan,” Awqaf said.
At the time of his passing, he was chairperson of the MJC Halaal Trust and of its senior body, the Imarah.
The organisation says Hendricks was a visionary.
“We feel his selfless passion and willingness to serve the community is something we had to pay tribute to,” said Collier.
