This quadriplegic man used his 67 minutes for Madiba to raise awareness for people with disabilities and has challenged able-bo-died people to give people like him a chance in a “normal” workplace.
Randall Wynkwart, 37, a mouth-painter from Tafelsig in Mitchells Plain, became a quadriplegic when he fell on his head in a freak accident at school. He was nine years old.

With the help of the Daily Voice and Shane Swiegelaar from The GrillFather restaurant in Wynberg, Randall was able to fulfil his wish of working as a waiter in a restaurant on Mandela Day. “I enjoyed working as a waiter, I served about 20 people in the first hour. I want to show people with disabilities that if I could do it, so can they.”
Randall used a home-made wooden board, placed over his remote-controlled wheelchair, to take orders and serve customers.

Shane says Randall would be paid. “It humbled me to see his communication skills, as he served people with a big smile.”
