Six South African DJs battled for the Red Bull 3Style Championships on Saturday, but it was third time lucky for a Kaapse DJ.
Calvin Potgieter, aka DJ Gremlin , 26, walked away with the title and an opportunity to compete in the world finals in Moscow in April 2020.
DJ Gremlin’s track selection and mixing skills were so kwaai, he toppled the rest of the contestants and drew the crowd’s attention within the minutes of his set.
The event was held at the District in Cape Town.
“This was my third time entering Red Bull 3Style and I finally won it. I am very excited and happy to be representing my country in Russia next year,” he says.
“I can’t wait to represent my city and my country on the global stage.
“Thank you to everyone that supported me.”
Each DJ had to showcase three different genres of music into a 15-minute set each.
They had to impress a panel of judges, including local legend Ready D, Hedspin and 2019 Red Bull 3Style World Champion, DJ Espinosa.
DJ Ready D said: “Judging the competition was really tough, the level of DJ’ing in South Africa has really increased and we are headed in the right direction. Congratulations to DJ Gremlin, he blew us and the audience away with his music selection. He took a lot of risks and that scored him very high.”
