A video has been making the rounds online of an alleged unsuccessful robbery after a "skelm" targeted the wrong e-hailing driver.
The video was posted by Fight Against Crime South Africa and shows an alleged attempted robbery where an alleged suspect attempted to rob an e-hailing driver while en route to Mitchells Plain.
The video starts with the driver shouting: “Nogal Mitchells Plain toe” to which the alleged skurk who looks frantic and breathing heavily responded: “I never knew, my mommy...,”
Before the "boef" can continue explaining the driver shouts: “Yay, never knew se p***. What are you talking about 'never knew'?”
Another man seated in the back taking the video says: “Ek maak vir jou binne in jou n*** jy. Kry jy.”
The 36-second video clip then shows a group of guys trying to forcefully pull the alleged skelm out of the backseat of a white Polo, but he refuses to leave. After the "skelm" is pulled out by his clothes, he is seen talking until someone kicks him in the face and he pretends to pass out as he can be seen lying on the floor flou.
When Daily Voice reached out to Fight Against Crime South Africa asking for the driver’s details, we were informed that the video was provided to them anonymously and they have no further information regarding the incident but will follow up if a case was opened or not.
Abie Isaacs, the founder of the Cape Flats Safety Forum commented on the increase of criminals targeting e-hailing drivers and the safety risk it has not only on the driver but on the passengers as well.
Isaacs explains: “The Cape Flats Safety Forum have noted the alarming rate of e-hailing drivers getting targeted by criminals. We appeal to all these drivers and passengers alike to be on alert at all times. We condemn any act of violence in the strongest terms.”
One user commented under the video: “There was an attempt in Eastridge with me too. Saw guys approaching me with knives. When they were near I made my pistol visible and ya they made u-turns. They need to be taught a lesson.” (sic)
Another added: “When he heard ‘kry jy’ he knew it was over. Everyone is trying to make a living, and they think it’s kwaai to just rob, especially these Uber drivers who are trying to make it easy for those who don’t have transport.”
However, one user gave another account of what happened, commenting that apparently the "skelm" is a ou "skurk" who books e-hailing services and takes off when it is time to betaal.
She adds: "He didn't rob the driver, he books Ubers (e-hailing services) and when he gets to his destinations then he takes off.
"So, he booked this driver but because the Uber drivers were aware of him and shared his photo around the booked driver picked him up and told the other Uber drivers to get them on Prince George Drive and that is why they attacked him."
