The Hawks have arrested EIGHT more people – suspected 27s gangsters – for the high-profile murder of “Steroid King” Brian Wainstein.
This comes just a day after top cops dragged five other men into the dock to join businessman Mark Lifman and alleged Sexy Boys gang boss Jerome “Donkie” Booysen for the murder plot of Wainstein, who was killed in Constantia in 2017.
Lifman, Booysen and alleged 27s gang boss William “Red” Stevens were arrested for Wainstein’s murder last month and were released on R100 000 bail each.
A week before the trio were due back in court, Red was shot dead outside his Scottsville home by two unknown gunmen.
On Tuesday, Lifman and Booysen appeared briefly in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court where they were informed that the matter was being postponed to 12 May for the preparation of the indictment, while the provisional charge sheet revealed a shocking murder plot by Red, Lifman and Andre Naude to kill Donkie’s brother, Colin Booysen, Nafiz Modack and former Springbok player, James Dalton.
Naude appeared along with Samuel Farquharson, Eagon Ansley Norman, Jacobus Stevens and former Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) Sergeant Wayne Henderson.
It is alleged that Henderson, a close colleague of slain AGU commander Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear, had taken a R100 000 bribe to tamper with evidence linked to Wainstein’s murder.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale says the eight new suspects were nabbed yesterday morning and appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on the same day.
“Anthony Christopher van der Watt, Ricardo Maarman, Typhyenne Jantjies , Bevan Cedrick Ezaus, Bradley De Bula, Kashief Hansloo, Rowendall Franklyn Stevens and Jason Maits appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court [yesterday] and were all given R5000 bail each.
“They were arrested by a multi-disciplinary team led by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in concert with Crime Intelligence and other Hawks investigating teams in Cape Town. The team was supported by members of the Visible Police.
“The assortment of charges include the alleged murder of Brian Wainstein.”
According to a source, the eight men also face charges of intimidation, possession of unlicensed firearms, providing firearms to people not allowed to have firearms, attempted murder and charges under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca).
Naude was given R50 000 bail while Farquharson was released on R20 000 bail and Henderson was freed on R5000 bail.
Stevens and Norman were both released on R10 000 bail each.
Police Minister General Bheki Cele hailed the arrests as a huge victory in the fight against organised crime.
“I'm encouraged that combined efforts by the police to tighten the grip on such crimes continue to yield results. There is clearly no space in society for crimes committed by the underworld that run extortion rackets that undermine the state,” Cele said.
