The Kraaifontein community has raised funds for a young girl fighting cancer.
The fundraiser was held for nine-year-old Zaarah Reid, who has bone cancer, at Scottsdene High School on Saturday.
Zaarah, who is in Grade 3 at Parkdene Primary, was chauffeured onto the school sports grounds by the BMW brigade of Scottdene.
Les Swiegelaar, chairman of Scottsdene We Care, said fear of leaving their homes prevented greater support.
He thanked everyone for showing up, including the Bands Not Gangs orchestra and “every support group who made the day possible”.
Zaarah’s mother Lizette Baardman said her girl was diagnosed in August, adding: “She always complained that her left leg was sore, then we saw [the cancer] on the X-ray. She immediately started on chemo.”
The cancer is inside the proximal tibia, the upper portion of the bone where it widens to help form the knee joint.
“Her leg does not have to be amputated, but [doctors at Tygerberg Hospital] will [explore treatment options] this week, which is why we need funds. The support is wonderful.”
Lizette said a book, titled Ongenooide Gaste by an author from the Northern Cape, about cancer was on sale.
Zaarah’s father Daniel Baardman said he is trusting God for healing.
Daniel said one of the big prizes on the day was a paint hamper worth R1400, which was raffled. Boerewors rolls were sold, while the girl’s ouma, Rosie Bessies, had special bracelets made.
She said: “I call the bracelets ‘arms of mercy’ to help our little fairy.”
