A 52-year-old police officer was shot and killed outside his home in 11th Street, Bishop Lavis at 6.30am.
The officer, identified as Lieutenant Colonel Andre Kay worked in the Fireams and Liquor Department.
He was backing out of his driveway when he was shot though the window on the driver’s side of the car and was hit in the upper body.
Paramedics and police were called to the scene immediately, but the officer died of his injuries before he could receive help.
Grieving family members and the community have descended on the home of the officer.
Saps' Brigadier Novela Potelwa and Major-General Andre Lincoln is on the scene with officers from the AGU.
Police Spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, who was on the scene confirms the shooting.
"The 52-year-old member was shot and died of his injuries at 6.30am this morning. An unknown assailant opened fire on the officer and ran over Lavis Town Train station towards Clarke Estate. Police forensic teams are combing the scene for evidence."
