A video of an altercation between a private security officer and a pedestrian is being shared widely on social media as the officer can be seen beating the pedestrian with his baton.
The incident took place in Durbanville and the video starts off with a bekgeveg between the Civil Defence Force officer and the pedestrian.
The officer can be heard saying: “Moenie saam my k@k praat nie. Ek sal vir jou moer” to which the pedestrian responded: “Vir wie? Jy maak staat op die klere [uniform].”
The two go back and forth arguing and shoving each other when the pedestrian says to the officer: “You are wrong you can’t hit that man, it just shows how dumb you are, bel die boere [police] vir die man.”
The video then shows the CDF officer beating the pedestrian with his baton and grabbing him in front of his chest before another CDF officer intervenes.
The CDF took to their social media to release a public statement.
They say: “CDF is aware of a video circulating on social media involving one of our officers. We want to assure the public and our loyal clients that this footage does not reflect the values and professional standards we uphold.”
“While our officers were in the process of making an arrest, an individual interfered and became aggressive. The situation then escalated.
"However, we take all incidents of this nature seriously and are conducting a full investigation. Additional footage is being reviewed, and we are working in full cooperation with the relevant authorities to ensure a fair and transparent process.”
They added that the officer has been suspended until the investigation is complete.
