It feels like I barely blinked and here Easter is coming again.
You know what this means of course: pickled fish!
There are many ways to skin a cat, and as I’ve learnt, to pickle fish.
I have seen aunties make batches which lasted for more than a week and still tastes delicious.
There is nothing like a lekker stukkie pickled snoek with a fresh warm hot cross bun to make happiness in your mouth.
I have come across quite a few recipes over the years, but the most delicious ones always include that spices you don’t want to bite on... allspice and whole aniseed.
The nice thing about a good pickled fish is that it is not expensive to make, that is if you remember to buy your fish at least two weeks in advance.

Because, as I’ve learned the hard way, if you try to buy your fish the week of Easter, you will pay up to R300 for a medium snoek. Even the onions are more expensive!
Besides pickled fish and hot cross buns, Easter also spells chocolate, and winkels are now full of chocolate bunnies and eggs.
My kids are not really chocolate lovers, but they love the cute packaging the treats come in so I can’t escape that trap.
I usually end up, against my better judgement, eating chocolate treats for weeks.
Be sure to have a look at our Daily Voice Pickled Fish competition winning recipe by Pickled Fish Queen Susan Parsons from Valhalla Park.
Enjoy, and go get your fish, voor jy jou arm moet gie vir ‘n snoek!
