A couple was killed in Khayelitsha after skelms apparently tried to steal their stokvel stash.
Lithemba Madela, 42, was with her boyfriend when the shooting happened on Sunday night in the SST-Section, Town Two, around 8pm.
The family says Lithemba was paid a stokvel on Sunday and hours later she was killed.
Lithemba’s son Thulani says he received a call just after the shooting.
“Her neighbours told me about what happened. They said they heard the gunshots and then went to check out what was going on,” he says.
“I went to the SST-Section with my other relatives and when I got there, the police had already cordoned off the area.
“We were told we couldn’t go to see the bodies inside and we were also informed that they were in a very bad condition, because forensics were still busy with the scene and then we waited.
“When we went into the house, blood was just everywhere. I later found out that she was there with her boyfriend and I don’t know his name.”
Thulani says his mom received her stokvel but quickly deposited it at the ATM because she didn’t want to carry cash around.
“She had just got home from church (on Sunday) and I heard that there were two people who came to her house and asked for money from her,” says the son.
“She must have told them that she didn’t have money and then they decided to shoot her and her boyfriend who was visiting at the time.
“How did they know she had the stokvel that day?
“We are waiting on the police to inform us about their investigation.”
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut, says the motive behind the shooting is still under investigation while no arrests have been made yet.
“The circumstances surrounding a double murder investigated following an incident last night at around 8pm in Town Two, Khayelitsha, where a man and a woman were shot and killed by unknown suspects. The suspects are yet to be arrested.”
